Scritto tra il 1815 e il 1816, questo romanzo fu pubblicato postumo, nel 1818, dopo la morte dell'autrice nel 1817. Sembra che il titolo originale fosse "The Elliotts", ma l'autrice non ebbe la possibilità di scegliere il titolo prima della sua morte. The innocent and insolent Daisy confronts the traditions of old Europe and confounds all of the people (especially the men) who surround her. All throughout the story, there are classic Jamesian views on the differences between English and American societies.
