As Christmas approaches, French Bulldog Smudge and baker Melody are looking forward to a break. That is until they find a body, and one of their friends is the prime suspect. Melody is busy preparing Christmas orders and notices that her friend Carole Archer has put in a huge order. Carole lets her know that she is due a big Christmas bonus from her boss and has decided to celebrate.

Ray Maloney arrives in Shale City with no memory and few clues as to his identity. Guided by a mysterious figure, he sets up business and begins work as a private detective. But there are many shadows in the streets. Ray will find himself up against shady businessmen, corrupt cops, and other predators waiting for a chance to strike.
