Working with the full cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith have accessed a wealth of previously untapped materials. In deze reeks hoorcolleges behandelt Anthonya Visser belangrijke Duitstalige schrijvers van de 18e tot en met de 21e eeuw. Teksten van Goethe, Heine, Kafka en anderen worden belicht vanuit literatuurhistorisch perspectief, waarbij vormaspecten vanzelfsprekend ook aan bod komen. Met aandacht voor klankkleur, vorm en karakter van zowel instrumenten en als van composities.

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) is zonder twijfel de belangrijkste componist geweest uit de boeiende periode waarin de renaissance overging in de barok. In deze periode componeerde Monteverdi aanvankelijk zuiver vocale madrigalen. Vanaf de eeuwwisseling schrijft hij steeds meer madrigalen die door instrumenten worden begeleid. In 1607 verscheen zijn eerste opera, Orfeo. Zijn tweede opera, L'incoronazione di Poppea, is een grote stap vooruit in het genre.

Het christendom heeft in vele opzichten een stempel gedrukt op de Westerse cultuur. Duidelijke voorbeelden daarvan zijn het ordenen van tijd en de kalender van feesten en bijzondere dagen. Wat is de betekenis van die feesten? Hoe en wanneer zijn ze ontstaan? Spelen voorchristelijke motieven een rol? Werkt de joodse feestkalender door in de christelijke? Hoe worden de feesten tegenwoordig gevierd, hier en elders in de christelijke kerk? In dit twee uur durende college beantwoordt Marius van Leeuwen deze en vele andere vragen op meeslepende en inspirerende wijze.
