In an alternate history where a modern-day country worships the gods of ancient Egypt, Meres is horrified to see her husband nailed into a sarcophagus and thrown into the river during a festival day. It wasn’t supposed to happen. Everything is going terribly wrong. Why would the priests want to kill him? Running away from the White-Walled City and the temple she loves, Meres hides in the desert of The Black Land, determined to follow the river and find her husband’s body to rescue his soul before it’s destroyed forever.
