Si, dans l'usage courant, le mot 'matière' renvoie aux idées de massivité, de solidité, de consistance –; bref, de 'substance' –;, la physique a depuis longtemps étendu l'usage du vocable à des objets physiques que le profane peine à considérer comme des corps matériels. Les gaz impalpables déjà autrefois, la lumière au vingtième siècle, voire même le vide maintenant se trouvent dotés par la physique de propriétés matérielles. Mais le haut degré d'abstraction de ces propriétés, par exemple dans la théorie quantique, justifie-t-il l'usage d'un mot courant aussi chargé d'associations mentales ?

The justification for the atomic bomb was simple: it would defeat Hitler and end the Second World War faster, saving lives. The reality was different.
