It almost goes without saying that Westminster Abbey is one of the foremost sites in Europe when it comes to being steeped in history. Dating back to the reign of William the Conqueror and the Norman conquest, Westminster Abbey has traditionally been the site of royal coronations, royal weddings, and royal burials, and anyone who enters can instantly feel that they are walking in the footsteps of some of the most influential figures in history, from Henry III to Queen Elizabeth I.

William Henry (Harrison) Heard (1850-1937) was born into slavery and became a clergyman of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He served as United States Ambassador to Liberia from 1895 through 1898. His autobiography contains a chapter on men who had influenced his life, and a poem on his life by Ephraim Tyler.

It is popularly believed Arius was born in Libya in AD 270. He is credited with having started one of the most deadly heretical sects to attack the early church - that of Arianism. It has continued assaulting the church until today, under many titles. Our first encounter with Arius is somewhere between AD 300-311, when he joined up with a group of heretics called Meletians. John Calvin describes the Catholic Church as “very miserable, and almost desperate” in this 1543 work. He appeals directly to Holy Roman Emperor King Charles V, pointing out the failures of the church and demanding change. On behalf of the reformers, Calvin details his proposed solution.

His son-in-law, the historian Tacitus, authored the text. The portion of the original text that survives today remains an important reference for historians and history buffs alike.
