Ludwig Bechstein, 1801 in Weimar geboren, war nicht nur herzoglicher Bibliothekar und Archivar, sondern schon zu seiner Zeit auch ein bekannter Schriftsteller. Neben Märchen, Romanen und historischen Studien schrieb er Reiseerzählungen. Oft beruhen seine Beschreibungen auf langen Wanderungen, die er mit Freunden unternahm. In seinen Wanderungen durch Thüringen, gelesen vom gebürtigen Weimarer Benjamin Kramme, ist es Bechsteins Alter Ego Otto, das seinen Freunden Lenz und Wagner eindrucksvoll seine thüringische Heimat präsentiert.
