Maupassant écrivit plus de 300 contes et nouvelles, en partie réunis dans 15 recueils. Ces récits courts, d'abord parus dans les journaux de l'époque, plaisent toujours autant aux lecteurs d'aujourd'hui. Réalistes ou fantastiques, drôles, légers ou au contraire acides et pathétiques, ils balayent des registres et des thèmes très divers. Immortalisée à l'écran par Jean Renoir, "Une partie de campagne" (1881) se déroule à Bezons, sur les bords de Seine, où les Dufour, une famille de commerçants parisiens, vont déjeuner.
