Thomas Boston explains the first commandment as consisting of three parts: Knowing. Acknowledging. Worshipping and glorifying. He shows that every command has an affirmative part and a negative. The negative is included in the affirmative, and the affirmative in the negative.

The Epistle of James says that anyone who considers him - or herself to be religious yet does not tame his tongue is self deceived. James says that such a person's religion is worthless. On the other hand, James refers to the person who tames his or her tongue as a perfect person. That's a stark contrast. There's a big difference between being a self-deceived person engaging in worthless religious practice, and being perfect or complete. If we take these words of the Bible seriously, we need to start taking our own words far more seriously then we normally do.

The First Epistle to the Corinthians is one of the Pauline epistles, part of the New Testament of the Christian Bible. The epistle is attributed to Paul the Apostle and a co-author, Sosthenes, and is addressed to the Christian church in Corinth. Scholars believe that Sosthenes was the amanuensis who wrote down the text of the letter at Paul's direction. The four canonical gospels contain little information about the childhood of Jesus. If asked, most of us want to make a difference, to live and love generously. But we get caught in the crazy rush of household routines, work demands, cranky attitudes, difficult people, exhaustion, worry, and pride, and once again we fail to love the people around us at all - let alone well.

Clement was probably a Gentile and a Roman. He seems to have been at Philippi with St. Paul (AD 57) when that first-born of the Western churches was passing through great trials of faith. There, with holy women and others, he ministered to the apostle and to the saints. As this city was a Roman colony, we need not inquire how a Roman happened to be there.
