Denne bog handler om mine oplevelser under og efter 2. verdenskrig på Lolland, men mest om mit møde med Vuk og hans folk som kom fra De 12 Ringes Planet. Jeg fik lov til at være sammen med dem og skulle skrive alt ned jeg oplevede. Og det gjorde jeg. Jeg har prøvet at have deres dragter på og fløjet med dem i deres trekantede fly og så hvordan de var indrettet - jeg har spist sammen med dem samt oplevet mange spændende ting som beskrevet, og mit indtryk af dem er, at de er meget hjælpsomme og omsorgsfulde og at de vil os det godt.

1776. The early days of the Revolutionary War. It supposedly began with Thomas Hickey, a private in the Continental Army, and New York governor William Tryon. In an astonishing power grab, they plotted to kill Hickey's boss: a man by the name of George Washington. In the end, Hickey was caught, brought to trial, and found guilty. It would seem he became the first person in the new nation to be executed for treason.

Flanders, June 1917: a British officer and celebrated poet is shot dead, killed not by German fire, but while recuperating from shell shock well behind the lines. A young English soldier is arrested and, although he protests his innocence, charged with his murder. Douglas Kingsley is a conscientious objector, previously a detective with the London police, now imprisoned for his beliefs. He is released, and sent to France in order to secure a conviction.

Hampshire, 1913. Amidst the glitz and glamour of England’s High Society, Sarah Trenwith is more of a wallflower living in the shadow of her beautiful sister Marianne.
