Esta teoría señala que los procesos inconscientes son elementos fundamentales del funcionamiento de la mente; pero, además Freud formuló, en base a éste y otros conceptos, un método terapéutico tendiente a curar numerosas patologías. Aunque muchos de los postulados del freudismo han sido cuestionados por sus seguidores posteriores sus principios generales y el corpus principal de la teoría psicoanalítica siguen siendo observadores tanto en la teorización, como en la investigación y en buena parte de la terapéutica clínica.

Sigmund Freud, geboren am 6. Mai 1856 in Freiberg in Mähren als Sigismund Schlomo Freud, gestorben am 23. September 1939 in London, ein österreichischer Neuropathologe, Tiefenpsychologe, Kulturtheoretiker und Religionskritiker, hielt diese 5 Vorlesungen über Psychoanalyse im September 1909 zur 20-jährigen Gründungsfeier an der Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Sigmund Freud gilt bekanntermaßen als Begründer der Psychoanalyse, die bis heute Anwendung findet und Pflichtlektüre für jeden Psychologie-Studenten und -Interessierten ist.
