Sigmund Freud, geboren am 6. Mai 1856 in Freiberg in Mähren als Sigismund Schlomo Freud, gestorben am 23. September 1939 in London, ein österreichischer Neuropathologe, Tiefenpsychologe, Kulturtheoretiker und Religionskritiker, hielt diese 5 Vorlesungen über Psychoanalyse im September 1909 zur 20-jährigen Gründungsfeier an der Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Es un libro escrito en 1927 por Sigmund Freud. En él describe su interpretación sobre los orígenes, desarrollo y psicoanálisis de la religión así como su futuro. Freud veía la religión como un falso sistema de creencias.

Esta teoría señala que los procesos inconscientes son elementos fundamentales del funcionamiento de la mente; pero, además Freud formuló, en base a éste y otros conceptos, un método terapéutico tendiente a curar numerosas patologías. Aunque muchos de los postulados del freudismo han sido cuestionados por sus seguidores posteriores sus principios generales y el corpus principal de la teoría psicoanalítica siguen siendo observadores tanto en la teorización, como en la investigación y en buena parte de la terapéutica clínica.

Freud comienza a partir de la exigencia cultural de virginidad de la mujer para llegar al matrimonio, buscando el "estado de servidumbre" que garantice su ulterior posesión sin sobresaltos. Esa medida de servidumbre sexual sería indispensable "para mantener el matrimonio cultural y poner diques a las tendencias polígamas que lo amenazan". Por eso a Freud le llaman la atención los rituales de pueblos en los que se evita que la desfloración quede a cargo del futuro marido, y sea realizada por otro personaje, y analiza las diferentes explicaciones de este "tabú de la virginidad".
