"Understood Betsy" is a beloved children's book that was first published in 1916. It tells the story of Elizabeth Ann, a young girl who has been raised in a sheltered and overprotective environment by her Aunt Frances. Elizabeth Ann is a timid and obedient child who has never been allowed to make her own decisions or take risks. She has always been told what to do and how to behave. Anne of Avonlea is a novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It was first published in 1909. Following Anne of Green Gables (1908), the book covers the second chapter in the life of Anne Shirley. This book follows Anne from the age of 16 to 18, during the two years that she teaches at Avonlea school. It includes many of the characters from Anne of Green Gables, as well new ones like Mr. Harrison, Miss Lavendar Lewis, Paul Irving, and the twins Dora and Davy.

A Girl of the Limberlost, a novel by the writer and naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter, was published in 1909 as the sequel to her earlier novel Freckles. The tale unfolds in and around the Limberlost Swamp of north-eastern Indiana and in the nearby town of Onabasha. The main character, Elnora Comstock, lives with her widowed mother, Katharine Comstock, on the edge of the wetlands. The embittered Katharine blames her daughter for the death of her husband, who was swallowed by quicksand.
