The Barter is a ghost story and a love story, a riveting emotional tale that also explores motherhood and work and feminism. Set in present-day Texas, and at the turn of the 20th century, the novel follows two young mothers at the turning point of their lives. Bridget has given up her career as an attorney to raise her daughter, joining a cadre of stay-at-home mothers seeking fulfillment in a quiet suburb. Recovering from a terrible auto accident just before the turn of the millennium, college dropout and hobbyist computer-game programmer Lucien Swenson becomes the caretaker of a house in Northern Minnesota. Shortly after moving in, Lucien sets out to find a woman with whom he had an affair, who vanished along with money stolen from the bank where they had worked together. His search will take him to Rose of Sharon, a white supremacist church deep in the wilderness, where a cabal of outcasts await the end of the world at a place they call The Land.

Pubblicato nel 1886, Lo strano caso del Dr. Jekyll e Mr. Hyde, è considerato una pietra miliare della letteratura di tutti i tempi. Il capolavoro di Stevenson analizza l'eterna lotta tra il bene ed il male con una potenza drammatica che lo ha reso un’opera di portata universale. Il tema del “doppio” emerge prepotentemente dagli esperimenti del dott. Jekyll, il quale esplorando il lato oscuro di ogni essere umano, incontra il suo spaventoso alter ego: Mr. Hyde.

Lo strano cado del Dr. Jekyll e Mr. Hyde di Robert Louis Stevenson è un romanzo psicologico imperniato sulla vicenda di un medico che scopre la doppia natura degli esseri umani e che si propone di creare un farmaco capace di separare le due anime dell’uomo, consentendo loro di vivere esistenze separate.

Pubblicato nel 1886, questo famosissimo romanzo di Stevenson è un grande classico della letteratura mistery e della fantascienza. Ciò non toglie che sia anche un grande opera letteraria che approfondisce la psicologia della scissione della personalità e il rapporto del uomo col suo lato ombra. Descrive inoltre mirabilmente lo stato di dipendenza provocato dalle droghe e l’illusione di potersene liberare facilmente si trova tutta nella frase del protagonista: “Posso liberarmi di Mr. Hyde quando voglio”.

El narrador intenta convencernos de su salud mental, diciéndonos que lo único que le pasa es que es un poco nervioso porque todos sus sentidos están extremadamente sensibilizados. El anciano con el que vive tiene un ojo azul que está velado, al que nuestro narrador describe como un ojo de buitre. El anciano realmente le cae bien pero odia el ojo de buitre....Hasta tal punto llega a odiar ese ojo que se convierte en una obsesión enfermiza, que le hace imposible no pensar en otra cosa que no sea planificar el asesinato del anciano.
