Greek Philosophy

In these aphorisms, the philosopher reflects on our mortality and the knowledge that we will suffer in this life. However, each of us has the choice to endure with dignity those setbacks that we cannot control, he contends. Acceptance is core in Stoic doctrine.

Life in Ancient Greece and Rome was tough. Violent wars and terrible diseases were much more common. Meno is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato. In it, the two characters, Meno and Socrates, discuss "arete", or virtue. This dialogue is also famous for introducing "Meno's Paradox".

Critias o De La Atlántida es uno de los últimos diálogos de Platón. Parece ser una continuación de La República y el Timeo, es de carácter inconcluso y su contenido describe la guerra entre la Atenas prehelénica y la Atlántida, hipotético imperio occidental e isla misteriosa descrita por el sofista Critias. Éste sostiene que la Atlántida existió en una época muy remota, y la sitúa «más allá de las columnas de Heracles». Dicha isla mitológica fue tragada por el mar y se perdió para siempre.

On Memory is a work of the Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle, included in the collection Parva Naturalia. The Parva Naturalia (a conventional Latin title first used by Giles of Rome: "short treatises on nature") are a collection of seven works by Aristotle, which discuss natural phenomena involving the body and the soul. They form parts of Aristotle's biology.

Lysis is a dialogue of Plato which discusses the nature often translated as friendship, while the word's original content was of a much larger and more intimate bond. It is generally classified as an early dialogue. The main characters are Socrates, the boys Lysis and Menexenus who are friends, as well as Hippothales, who is in unrequited love with Lysis and therefore, after the initial conversation, hides himself behind the surrounding listeners.

In Plato's Ion Socrates discusses with the titular character, a professional rhapsode who also lectures on Homer, the question of whether the rhapsode, a performer of poetry, gives his performance on account of his skill and knowledge or by virtue of divine possession. It is one of the shortest of Plato's dialogues.

The Menexenus is a Socratic dialogue of Plato, traditionally included in the seventh tetralogy along with the Greater and Lesser Hippias and the Ion. The speakers are Socrates and Menexenus, who is not to be confused with Socrates' son Menexenus. The Menexenus of Plato's dialogue appears also in the Lysis, where he is identified as the "son of Demophon", as well as the Phaedo. The Menexenus consists mainly of a lengthy funeral oration, referencing the one given by Pericles in Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian War.

The ancient Greeks were explorers in many ways. They traveled to new places, creating colonies in strange lands far from their original homes. They were survivors. They were honorable thieves. They used their cunning to explore the frontiers of philosophy and they wrested from the chaos of the surrounding wilderness the building blocks of civilization.

Among all the texts and manuscripts of mythology, the Greek mythology is believed to be the most ancient one. Just like all other mythic beliefs, Greek mythology also holds specific beliefs about the origin of this universe and the phenomenon of evil and goodness. These myths have travelled hundreds of years and have sustained the blows of alterations and personal depictions.

San Severino Manlio Boezio (475 - 525) è stato un filosofo romano, venerato dalla Chiesa Romana come santo e martire. Le sue opere influenzarono notevolmente la filosofia cristiana del Medioevo, tanto che alcuni lo collocano tra i fondatori della Scolastica, per quanto l'opera si fondi sulle tradizioni stoiche e soprattutto neoplatoniche. Accusato, forse falsamente di aver voluto restaurare la libertà di Roma, nel settembre del 524 viene incarcerato a Pavia qui scrive il De consolatione philosophiae.

Il "Timeo", scritto intorno al 360 a. C. da Platone, è il dialogo che ha maggiormente influito sulla filosofia e sulla scienza posteriori. In esso vengono approfonditi essenzialmente tre problemi: quello dell'origine dell'universo, quello della sua struttura materiale, ed infine quello della natura umana. Ai tre argomenti corrispondono altrettante parti in cui è possibile suddividere l'opera, alle quali va aggiunto il prologo.

Sympósion heißt Trinkgelage. Die Teilnehmer "lagerten" sich halb aufgerichtet auf einer "Klìne" - einer hochbeinigen Liege, die zwei bis drei Personen Platz bot. Trinkgefäße wurden herumgereicht. Man erzählte und diskutierte. Bei Platon versammeln sich Sokrátes, der Komödiendichter Aristophánes, der Politiker Alkibiádes, ein Arzt namens Eryxímachos, dessen Freund Phaídros, der junge preisgekrönte Tragödiendichter Agáthon und dessen älterer Liebhaber Pausanías.
