"The State of Israel is not actually a country, not a society, not a people—it is a collection of reasons," writes Amos Oz. These reasons struggle and clash with each other, screaming to the heavens, sometimes pulling out a gun in the square. The growing divide is the contemporary Israeli identity: left and right, ultra-Orthodox and secular, Mizrahi and Ashkenazi, veterans and immigrants, socialists and free-market adherents, fanatics and liberals, skeptics and idealists, Palestinians and Jews, the founding fathers and post-modern great-grandchildren.

On the edge of the Isleta Indian Reservation in the foothills of New Mexico lies the Decalogue Stone, a giant boulder inscribed with the Ten Commandments in Phoenician Hebrew characters. The Indians, Spanish and Americans knew of its existence, and the nearby Crypto-Jewish community of Los Quelites venerated it, building a secret altar that the Spanish Inquisition smashed and destroyed.
