London, 1878. One April morning, a small boat bearing a young woman’s corpse floats down the murky waters of the Thames. When the victim is identified as Rose Albert, daughter of a prominent judge, the Scotland Yard director gives the case to Michael Corravan, one of the only senior inspectors remaining after a corruption scandal the previous autumn left the division in ruins. Reluctantly, Corravan abandons his ongoing case, a search for the missing wife of a shipping magnate, handing it over to his young colleague, Mr. Stiles.

November 1940. Darkness descends, and another anxious night begins for those tasked with guarding the industrial heartland of London from enemy attack. As a policeman patrols the Royal Albert Dock, something catches his eye - a man is sprawled awkwardly across a nearby barge, a dagger lodged in his back. Detective Inspector John Jago of West Ham CID discovers the victim was a dock worker by day and a Home Guard volunteer by night - and there are things even his wife doesn't know about his past.

On a stormy night in March 1941, Maisie Rose Hawkins leaves her drunk husband, Stan, out in the rain - and he disappears. Detective Sergeant Bob Robbins and young PC Laurie Oliver are called out to investigate and discover that Stan’s small fishing boat is gone, the rope sawn through. As Bob searches for answers, it becomes apparent that in this small Cornish village where everyone knows everything about everybody, nobody quite knows the truth.

October, 1940. Bombs are falling on Stratford when air-raid warden Sylvia Parks sees a house with a light shining like a beacon to the enemy aircraft overhead, violating the strict blackout regulations. With no answer at the door she manages to break in, only to discover the body of a young woman – and she's been strangled with a stocking. For Detective Inspector John Jago, the scene brings back memories of the gruesome Soho Strangler, who murdered four women in the mid-1930s but has never been caught. Is there a connection?

Sofort gerät der Journalist und ehemalige Cop Tommy Smith ins Fadenkreuz der rassistischen Polizisten. Um sich zu entlasten, muss Smith mehr über die Geschichte erfahren, an der Bishop gearbeitet hat.

Zögernd vertraut Druwe sich britischen Militärs an. Dort zeigt man sich hochinteressiert.

Der Jack-the-Ripper-Mythos bekommt neues Futter! 1888 versetzte ein unbekannter Serienmörder das Londoner East End in Angst und Schrecken - heute setzt er sein grausiges Werk fort.Während der Mord an einer Prostituierten die Polizei vor ein Rätsel stellt, erkennt Privatdetektivin Maxine Atwood in der abscheulichen Tat die Handschrift eines alten Bekannten: Jack the Ripper. Die in die Menschenwelt verbannte Gefallene hofft zunächst auf einen Zufall, doch "Saucy Jacky" meldet sich bald schon persönlich bei seiner einstigen Rivalin.

Hier soll er als Polizist für Ordnung sorgen. Als ein hoher Funktionär der NSDAP ermordet wird, wollen seine Vorgesetzten sogleich den ersten Verdächtigen, einen entflohenen Häftling, aburteilen. Doch Druwe stellt sich gegen die Profiteure des untergehenden Regimes. Ihm zur Seite steht allein die Schwester des Verdächtigen, die wie er voller Mut und Hoffnung den Kampf gegen einen übermächtigen Gegner aufnimmt.
