Wenn jemand in der Themse ertrinkt, ist das in London kaum eine Zeitungsschlagzeile wert. Doch wenn sich Todesfälle dieser Art häufen, kann man schwerlich noch von Zufall sprechen. Starben die jungen Männer wirklich durch tragische Unfälle, oder waren sie des Lebens über-drüssig? Was Doktor Watson zunächst wir eine Zeitungsente erscheint, wird schon kurz darauf zu einem Rätsel für Sherlock Holmes. Offenbar werden in London Diebstähle von ei-nem unsichtbaren Täter ausgeführt. Als dann auch noch Lestrade auf die beiden zu-kommt und sie mit Miss Baxter bekanntmacht, die unfreiwillig unsichtbar geworden ist, kommt der Fall erst richtig in Fahrt. Hinzu kommt, dass Wiggins, der Anführer der Baker Street Spezialeinheit, irgendwie in den Fall verwickelt ist, Holmes aber diesmal nicht unterstützen kann.

Der Tod des Sohnes eines gefallenen Kriegskameraden führt Dr. Watson in die Grafschaft Kent. In Maidstone will er an der Bestattung des jungen Mannes teilnehmen, doch was er dann in der Kirche erlebt, lässt ihm und der Trauergemeinde das Blut in den Adern gefrieren. Watson telegraphiert nach London, und nur kurze Zeit später beginnt Sherlock Holmes seine Ermittlungen.
