The small lakeside town of Wolfhollow, New Hampshire is bustling with Fourth of July tourists. The week-long holiday festivities are interrupted when a valuable letter from the Revolutionary War is stolen from the town museum. Fourteen-year-old Leah Bartlett and her two siblings, eleven-year-old Avery and nine-year-old Grayson, jump in to solve this summer mystery. The local newspaper nicknamed the Bartlett children the Rucksack Kids for the canvas backpacks they each carry.

It’s autumn in New England and Truly and her fellow Pumpkin Falls Private Eyes are gearing up for the annual Halloween Festival. Aunt True and her new husband, Rusty, have bought Ethel and Elmer Farnsworth’s dilapidated old farm on the edge of town, where they’re going to raise sheep and where Truly and her grandparents have volunteered to farm- and sheep-sit while the newlyweds are on their honeymoon. But as always, there are mysteries and secrets afoot in Pumpkin Falls. Jack-o’-lanterns outside the shops downtown are going missing—in broad daylight!

They can't wait to see the sights and have a Thanksgiving dinner, just like the Pilgrims would have eaten. Then the kids learn about a sapphire necklace that went missing on the real Mayflower. Could the 400-year-old treasure be hidden somewhere nearby? And will someone else find it before they do?

A giant turkey is on the loose! Nate, the great detective, and his dog, Sludge, hear the news on the radio. But Nate doesn't want to take a case that everyone in town is on. Not even when Claude claims that he saw the turkey, then lost him in the woods. He holds up a turkey feather to prove it. Now Sludge wants the case. Claude wants Sludge, and off they go. Miles away...Nate's cousin Olivia Sharp - herself a detective - hears about the missing turkey on TV. Before he can say gobble, gobble, Olivia appears on Nate's doorstep.

It's getting dark, and a monster snowstorm is on the way. Will they find the presidential pooch in time?
