Ellie, a 30-year-old college professor, decides to purchase and renovate an old schoolhouse in the country. Despite the constant disapproval from her nagging mother, she is ready for the peace and the solitude of country living. Ellie instead finds her new home to have some unwelcome, paranormal guests. After a terrifying couple of nights, that she tries, but logically cannot explain, she enlists the help of her twin brother, Gauge. Ellie and Gauge turn to the university where they are both employed, and find a small Paranormal Psychology Department.

It all started with the school rabbit. Snowflake is the school rabbit, and Snowflake is trouble. At least that's what Tommy thinks, and when Snowflake is unexpectedly left for him to look after and everything starts to go wrong, it looks like Tommy might be right. Even if he is getting more pocket money for feeding it and might be able to afford a new bike after all. And with a sick sister left in bed, a snobby actor left with suspiciously damp trousers, and no rabbit anywhere to be seen, Tommy can see his hopes of a new bike disappearing as fast as Snowflake.

The year is 1988, and the old Crowford School building is about to be knocked down. Before that happens, however, three schoolchildren are determined to discover the truth about an old legend. Does the ghost of a murdered woman really haunt the old school? And if she does, what does she want from the living? Eleven-year-old Bradley Firth has a particular reason for wanting to prove that the ghost is real. His own mother is desperately ill, and Bradley wants to believe that she can come back to him if the worst happens.

In 1917, East Side Grade School in Eureka, Kansas, burned to the ground. In 1918, a carpenter died in a fall during construction of Mulberry School. It was said he haunted the school ever since. Teachers, students, and staff encountered apparitions after the school's dedication. One teacher knew the victim and welcomed any sign of his existence. Others, however, did not. She coped with the loss of her friend and managed to go on with unusual help from the universe.
