Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (aka PG Wodehouse) wrote in excess of 90 books, 40 plays, and 200 short stories between 1902 and 1974 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest humorists of the 20th century. Right Ho, Jeeves! is his second in a series of books written about a luckless young British millionaire named Bertram Wooster and his sharp valet, Jeeves.

The Inimitable Jeeves, sees the welcomed return of the loveable fop Bertie Wooster and his ever faithful valet Jeeves. This second book in the Jeeves series follows our favorite English toff as he gets himself into more tricky situations, usually trying to assist his old school friend Bingo Little in his ongoing quest for love.

Volume 2 continues our story by picking up with the flight of Sophia from her father, Squire Western, and continues the journey of Tom as he ponders his future on the road to London. In a series of tightly constructed plot twists and turns, Tom and Sophia end up at the same inn, unbeknownst to one another. Meanwhile, a plethora of new characters are introduced.

Tom Jones is greatly admired not only for the meticulous craft with which it was written, but also for its humor, objectivity and penetrating psychological depth. It is without a doubt one of the great contributions to the English novel, and as such will always maintain a place of honor in world literature. Through the minute examination of the motives of his characters, Henry Fielding revealed many universal truths about human nature.

Tom Jones is a splendid Hogarthian panorama of 18th-century English life and morals, encompassing both city and country, and comprising some of the greatest comic characters in British literature. First published in 1749, it was an instant success and has gone on to become a classic of its genre. Quite simply, there has never been anything like it.

The focus in Melincourt is the operation of the "rotten borough" which corrupted the English electoral system until the reform bill of 1832. A rotten borough was a constituency that had been established by royal prerogative but had subsequently lost most of its population. Nevertheless, it still retained the right to have two representatives in the House of Commons. On the other hand, many population centers which had expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution were not entitled to any electoral representation.

Yet with many rivals for the hands of both parties, events are not guaranteed to run smoothly. A rare foray into comedy by the giant of Russian literature, this tale still possesses all the hallmarks of Dostoevsky's psychological and philosophical writing.

L'opera (qui nella traduzione di Silvio Spaventa Filippi) fu scritta a puntate, come le precedenti, nel 1843-44, ma la tiratura delle copie fu circa la metà dei precedenti successi di Dickens, per cui ci fu una rottura con gli editori che costrinsero Dickens a rimborsare il denaro da loro spesi. Dickens cambiò allora il titolo dell'opera in "America", approffittando del suo viaggio in America per inserire una satira di quel continente e dei suoi abitanti, satira tanto più feroce in quanto sentiva che il nuovo mondo aveva distrutto delle illusioni di quanti speravano di vedervi realizzati i propri ideali.

Casa Desolata è il nono romanzo di Dickens. Non è uno dei romanzi più noti di Dickens, certamente è uno dei più complessi, con una grandissima quantità di personaggi, che vengono presentati dettagliatamente nella prima parte del romanzo, per poi ritrovarne le vite intrecciate in trame insospettabili. Inoltre, più che in altri romanzi, lo scrittore coglie l’occasione per denunciare l’indifferenza verso la povertà e l’ingiustizia presenti nella società dell’epoca.

Pubblicato originariamente in venti puntate mensili, tra il 1836 e il 1837, il romanzo incontrò già all'epoca un grande successo popolare, soprattutto a partire dalla comparsa di Sam Weller (nel quinto capitolo), che portò le vendite a oltre quarantamila copie per numero. Oreste Del Buono sottolineava che la pubblicazione dei fascicoli rappresentava una sorta di evento: li leggevano nei cortili ad alta voce a tutta la famiglia.

Moriae encomium, zu Deutsch: Lob der Torheit (oder Lob der Narrheit), ist der Titel eines der bekanntesten Werke des niederländischen Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam. Das Werk, ein herausragendes, zu seiner Zeit wirkmächtiges Beispiel der Narrenliteratur, ist auch als Laus stultitiae bekannt. Es wurde eines der meistgelesenen Bücher der Weltliteratur und wurde schon zu Lebzeiten des Erasmus in viele europäische Sprachen übersetzt, denn Satiren waren in der Renaissance die bevorzugte Literatur der Gebildeten.

Ein englischer Geschäftsmann, Mr Wood, hat einen glorreichen Einfall, wie er den Iren ihr Geld auf ebenso geschickte wie schamlose Art und Weise legal aus deren Taschen ziehen kann. Jedoch hat er nicht damit gerechnet, dass Mr. Jonathan Swift seinen durch höchste britische Stellen abgesegneten Beutezug durchschauen würde. In der Analyse und Auseinandersetzung mit den Argumenten des "englischen Wirtschaftsgenies" wird die unglaubliche Heuchelei, Unverschämtheit und gewissenlose Gerissenheit ans Tageslicht gebracht, mit welcher skrupellose britische Turbo-Kapitalisten die irische Bevölkerung auszubeuten beabsichtigen.

Charles De Coster, 1827 in München geboren, aufgewachsen in Brüssel, griff die Legende vom Taugenichts Till Eulenspiegel auf und transportierte sie ins 16. Jahrhundert, genauer in die Zeit des Achtzigjährigen Krieges. Womöglich war es sein Engagement für die Satire-Zeitung "Uylenspiegel", das De Coster den Volkshelden näherbrachte. Doch ist sein "Ulenspiegel" nicht nur ein Schelmenstück, sondern auch ein historischer Roman mit einer Hauptfigur, die Freiheitsheld und Widerstandskämpfer zugleich ist.

Ist Optimismus gerechtfertigt? Nicht, wenn man Voltaire glauben darf. In seiner satirischen Novelle "Candide" malt der Autor ein pessimistisches Weltbild. Und was packt der Autor nicht alles in diese Geschichte! Ein unübertreffliches Beispiel reiner Erzählfreude!!!
