"Il fantasma di Canterville" ("The Canterville Ghost", 1887) è un celebre racconto umoristico giovanile di Oscar Wilde. Pubblicato per la prima volta sulla rivista Court and Society Review, il racconto ebbe un enorme successo e alcuni elementi della storia sono entrati nell'immaginario popolare. Ne sono stati realizzati numerosissimi adattamenti per il cinema, la televisione e il teatro. È una divertente parodia delle storie di fantasmi.

Northanger Abbey fu il primo romanzo di Jane Austen ad essere pubblicato anche, se in precedenza erano già state stese delle versioni di Orgoglio e pregiudizio e di Ragione e Sentimento. Il suo titolo originario, Susan (nome della protagonista che fu poi mutato in Catherine) fu rivisto per la stampa dalla Austen nel 1803, e venduto ad un editore che decise poi di non pubblicarlo.

“Oblomovismo” è un modo di vivere, anzi, una malattia, il cui termine viene coniato dall’amico del protagonista di questo romanzo di Gonciarov, diventato famoso per la proverbiale pigrizia. Oliver Twist fu il secondo romanzo di Dickens, pubblicato a puntate mensili dal 1837 al 1839. E' una delle opere più famose dello scrittore, primo romanzo inglese ad avere un ragazzo come protagonista e uno dei primi romanzi sociali. L'umorismo feroce con cui Dickens descrive la società inglese, la povertà, l'abuso infantile, l'ipocrisia della cultura fu decisamente una novità.

"Il Maestro e Margherita" è il romanzo più conosciuto di Michail Bulgakov e capolavoro della letteratura del XX secolo. Oggetto di censura da parte dell'autorità dell'Unione Sovietica, vede la pubblicazione nella sua integrità solo venti anni più tardi. A rendere il romanzo tanto scabroso è l'impietoso e satirico ritratto della Russia stalinista che l'autore fa emergere attraverso le caratterizzazioni dei numerosi personaggi che prendono parte alla storia: individui meschini e gretti, la cui infima statura morale viene svelata dall'arrivo, inatteso e incredibile, di Satana in persona, incarnato nell'esperto di magia nera Woland, e del suo losco e bizzarro entourage.
