Irish Biography

On December 7th, 1955, Kitty McInerney lay dying in a New York hospital bed. The 47-year-old Irish immigrant, suffering from severe toxemia, was preparing for an emergency c-section to give birth to her 17th child. As a Catholic priest performed her last rites, Kitty succumbed to a rare moment of quiet reflection.

Born in a Dublin tenement in the middle of the 20th century, this dead-poor, curious Irish girl escaped to Paris when she was 17 with the help of a nun, a Hollywood actor, and a kind stranger. There she was accepted into the emigre community blacklisted in the McCarthy era. She met James Baldwin and Ring Lardner, Jr.; Ruth Gordon gave her a fur coat. Still restless and full of dreams she spent years working her way around the world. On a ship bound for Egypt with her year-old daughter Aisling she fell in love with a radical longshoreman from San Francisco.

This is an almost true Irish story. Murphy was a child of the newly emerging 1950's Irish middle class. He was raised in the environment of a conflicted marriage that never should have happened. While his privileged upbringing seemed idyllic to the outside world, his reality was starkly different. Life at home was always turbulent; he never knew what daily chaos would erupt.

"Fudge" is the kindest nickname given to a half-Black child born smack in the middle of a family of eight children who were not only White, they were Irish. This memoir shares experiences of one of more than 1,000 mixed-race children, many of whom grew up conflicted about their racial identity and feeling abandoned by their Black American military fathers stationed throughout Great Britain during World War II.
