There are many mysterious and evil things lurking on Oakwood Island. Things so strange that the locals are left wondering if their small coastal community will ever be the same. The police are concerned when Maggie, the local waitress, shows up at their doorstep cold, weak and frail, after having escaped a kidnapper that she describes as a monster. Her strange symptoms of a mysterious illness that seems to be growing stronger baffles her nurses and doctor. What happened to her?

It was their love for sailing that brought Jack and Karen Billings together. Anytime they had free time, they could be found aboard their most prized possession, the Marlow Explorer. "Why don't we throw a Halloween party?" Jack volunteered. "The weather looks perfect for sailing, and it'd be a great way to get all our friends back together." Hell Hill Island was founded in 1863 by Marshall Sam Tucker who didn't believe in a fair trial because of his short fuse. If you back talked the Marshall, he would shoot you in both legs, then drag your wounded body with a rope he held as he rode his horse up to the Gallows to be hung high and when the Marshall was through watching the dead body swing back and forth on the Gallows, he would set their body on fire and light his cigar from the flames off their body.

We all long to find a time when we can escape the daily grind and find a hideaway where we won’t be disturbed. We may have projects to complete or rest to enjoy, but the choice of that location is critical. Algernon Blackwood provides a short story of just such a man who is alone in a cottage on a Canadian island. He should have picked a better location, but then this memorable story wouldn’t exist.

This story revolves around an empty house on an uninhabited island in this work by Algernon Blackwood. The atmosphere is filled with dread, and the flow of the prose is superb.
