명탐정의 대명사 셜록 홈즈가 처음 등장하는 작품. 아프가니스탄에서 막 돌아온 예비역 군의관 존 H. 왓슨 박사는 요양을 위해 하숙집을 찾던 중 베이커 가 221B번지에서 셜록 홈즈라는 인물과 같이 하숙을 하게 된다.

주홍색 습작에 기록된 사건 발생 7년 후의 이야기로, 왓슨의 기록으로는 두번 째가 되는 작품. 홈즈가 해결한 사건들 중에서 가장 유명한 사건 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 홈즈는 바솔로뮤 숄토의 죽음에 관련된 미스터리와 도둑맞은 아그라의 보물을 추적한다.
