This task is made even harder by all of the changes that are always occurring in the various technology fields. As the CIO you need to be understand how to pick the correct type of database to be used on projects. You need to watch the rollout of other large-scale IT projects and learn from them: what went right and what went wrong.

Product failures are never something that a product manager wants to talk about. We all live with the secret dread that someday the product that we are responsible for might turn out to be a failure. It turns out that we're all missing an important learning opportunity. Products do fail, and they end up failing for a wide range of reasons. During a negotiation a lot of promises and agreements are made by both sides of the table. If I don’t do my job right, my company will probably decide to stop offering my product after a while. Ultimately, my career is in my hands.

What does it take to be a successful CIO? Studies have shown that the average CIO only holds on to the job for roughly 4 years - what can you do to have a longer career? It turns out that the answer to this question is simple: You need to find ways to work with the rest of the business. What this means is that although your technical skills and your ability to work with the rest of the people in the IT department are what got you this far, it's not going to be what you need in order to stay in the job. You are going to need to develop a new set of skills.
