Drawing on a huge range of sources - letters, memoirs, conversations - Orlando Figes tells the story of how Russians tried to endure life under Stalin. Those who shaped the political system became, very frequently, its victims. Those who were its victims were frequently quite blameless. The Whisperers recreates the sort of maze in which Russians found themselves, where an unwitting wrong turn could either destroy a family or, perversely, later save it: a society in which everyone spoke in whispers - whether to protect themselves, their families, neighbours or friends - or to inform on them.

Thelonius Monk (not his real name) and Linda Evangelista (not her real name) meet in Saint Petersburg after the Soviet Union's collapse, in 1991. They journey to Yalta, where Thelonius promises to make Linda famous in the fashion magazines. But in fact, he's drafting a novel about her. Over the course of their travels, the two indulge in all sorts of sensual amusements - extravagant dinners, luxury automobiles, seaside hotels - while they engage in grand discussions of love, art, celebrity, and other existential polarities.

A biography capturing the adult life of Dr. Milorad Velimirović, a Serb who studied and lived in Czarist Russia in the decades just before WWI and the Russian Revolution. His life is revealed through letters home which contain descriptions of concerts and plays, politics of the day and his attendance at social events; all of this is in addition to the expected personal and familial concerns of an eldest son for his parents and younger brothers and sisters.

In 1999's Everyday Stalinism, historian Sheila Fitzpatrick rejects the common practice of simplistically treating the Soviet Union as a totalitarian government that tightly controlled its citizens. She takes advantage of vast archives that were released after the Cold War to examine Soviet society "from below" - looking at how ordinary citizens coped with shortages and the general sense of fear created by the state.
