Il romanzo si apre con Jonathan Harker che si reca in Transilvania presso il Castello del Conte Dracula per fargli firmare dei documenti per l'acquisto di una casa in Inghilterra. Si accorge subito che il conte ha qualcosa di sovrumano e di diabolico e soprattutto discutibili abitudini notturne ma nello stesso tempo ne è attratto e non riesce a fuggire. Così come tutti quelli che entrano in contatto con il conte e che vengono, inesorabilmente, coinvolti in un'avventura mostruosa.

L'agente Sara Milani e il suo giovane braccio destro, Lauro, tornano a lavorare insieme per un'indagine all'ultimo sospiro... In un piccolo paese nella ridente e florida Val Vignè si aggira un pericoloso assassino, che nessuno riesce a fermare. Ma chi o cosa sarà questa creatura che uccide, per poi svanire nel nulla? Solo due veri esperti del brivido come Lauro e Sara potranno risolvere il caso, a patto di riuscire a sopravvivere alla misteriosa mano che colpisce ogni dodici del mese, senza lasciare scampo.

Though published second after Altmann's Tongue, The Din of Celestial Birds (1997) consists of the best of Evenson's early stories. M. R. James (Montague Rhodes James) was a noted British medieval scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905-1918) and of Eton College. He is best remembered today for his ghost stories, which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature. As a medieval scholar his output in that field was phenomenal and remains highly respected in scholarly circles.
