Flatboats were the most prolific type of vessel on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers during the early 1800s. Thousands of these boats descended the two rivers each year, carrying not only valuable cargo to New Orleans but also western-bound emigrants to newly opened territories. By the late 1800s, flatboats had completely disappeared, and no intact examples were known to exist. That changed in 2000, when local residents found a wreck on the Ohio River shoreline in Illinois.

With further exploration, Bolsterli found that when Chavis' children crossed the Mississippi River between 1859 and 1875 for exile in Arkansas, they passed into the white world, leaving the family’s racial history completely behind.

Gottfried Keller wurde 1819 in Zürich geboren. Er starb 1890 ebenfalls in Zürich. "Kleider machen Leute" (1874) ist wohl die bekannteste Novelle Kellers aus dem Zyklus "Die Leute von Seldwyla". Zahlreiche Verfilmungen und Vertonungen hat das Werk erfahren. Keller vereint hier meisterlich komische Gesellschaftskritik mit einer poetischen Liebeshandlung. Als Satiriker nimmt Keller Eigen- und Standesdünkel ebenso aufs Korn wie Gutgläubigkeit und Unterwürfigkeit.

This short work of Wilde's was written during his two year incarceration for "gross indecency". This work is a letter which sorts out his life, and his love toward Lord Alfred Douglas. Wilde wrote this as a farewell letter to Douglas.
