Ob das 2000 Jahre alte Lehrgedicht über die Liebe heutzutage noch praktisch hilfreich ist, müssen Jüngere beurteilen. Die ältere Generation mag jedenfalls ihr ästhetisches Vergnügen daran haben. Oder wird man mich schelten, weil ich ein Frauenbild verbreiten helfe, das so gar nicht in unsere Zeit passt (und das ja auch gar nicht meines ist)?

Martial was a Latin poet from Hispania best known for his 12 books of Epigrams, published in Rome between A.D. 86 and 103, during the reigns of the emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan. In these short, witty poems, he cheerfully satirises city life and the scandalous activities of his acquaintances, and romanticises his provincial upbringing.

The Georgics was published in 29 BCE, and is the second major work by the Latin poet Virgil. Its a fascinating insight into rural life and farming of the time.

Henry Bonaventure Monnier naît à Paris en 1805. Personnage truculent du 19e siècle, il va exercer son talent et sa verve dans les domaines artistiques les plus divers. Se révélant très doué pour le dessin, il quitte à 16 ans son emploi de petit gratte-papier chez un notaire pour aller travailler dans des ateliers célèbres, notamment celui du peintre Gros, qu'il doit bientôt quitter en raison de son esprit gouailleur et mystificateur. Très vite il est attiré par le dessin satirique et compose alors une série d'ouvrages ridiculisant les mœurs de l'époque, qu'il illustre de ses caricatures et de ses croquis pris sur le vif.
