Published posthumously in 1919, this collection of diary entries presents a scathing picture of army life and is said to be one of the most vivid accounts of daily life in the trenches. It chronicles West's increasing disillusion with war and his move toward pacifist and atheist beliefs. The final part consists of his powerful war poems, including God, How I Hate You, You Young Cheerful Men, and Night Patrol. West was killed by a sniper in 1917. In view of some of his poems, one wonders if death was not unwelcome.

In 1918, Gerald Condon was a 20 year old American Private training as a Signalman before serving in France. By World War 2 he was a 20 year veteran of the Buffalo, NY Police Department when he re-enlisted to "finish what we started 25 years ago". When he shipped out for England in 1944 he was engaged to Ann Lyden the widowed Grandmother of Jerry Lyden. Excerpts from his letters home are included and are read in the voice of Ann Lyden. This role is voiced by Irene Dennis. The young Gerald is voiced by Padraic Harrison. Jerry Lyden reads the words of his grandfather, Gerald Condon.

October 8, 1918: Amid the last of the Allies' attempts to defeat the Germans, Sgt. Alvin York of Tennessee found himself and his platoon of only 17 men trapped in the thick of heavy machine gun fire. Lieutenant General James Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, is one of the best-known figures of the war.
