The fighting in North Africa during World War II is commonly overlooked, aside from the famous battle at El Alamein that pitted the British under General Bernard Montgomery against the legendary "Desert Fox", Erwin Rommel. Abdel Karim AlKhattabi, also spelled Abdelkarim el-Khattabi, was a prominent Moroccan nationalist and leader of the Moroccan independence movement during the mid 20th century. AlKhattabi played a crucial role in organizing and leading the armed resistance against French and Spanish colonial rule in Morocco. He became a symbol of resistance and a champion of Moroccan independence. AlKhattabi led the Rif Republic, an independent state established in the Rif region from 1921 to 1926.
