Where do you get your values and sensibilities from? If you grew up in a Western democracy, the answer is probably liberalism. The question "What is good and evil?" may seem simple, but as the book shows, it's more complex than you might think. This sort of philosophical thinking, though often reserved for college students, can broaden the thinking of younger children. The works of different philosophers are used to explore this important question in clear, simple language and in terms that children ages 10 and older can understand.

In his autobiography, David Hume declared unequivocally that this work, An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals (1751) is "of all my writings, historical, philosophical, or literary, incomparably the best." Adam Smith (1723-1790) was a Scottish social philosopher and a pioneer of political economy. In 1972, the young philosopher Peter Singer published "Famine, Affluence and Morality," which rapidly became one of the most widely discussed essays in applied ethics. Through this article, Singer presents his view that we have the same moral obligations to those far away as we do to those close to us. He argued that choosing not to send life-saving money to starving people on the other side of the earth is the moral equivalent of neglecting to save drowning children because we prefer not to muddy our shoes. If we can help, we must—and any excuse is hypocrisy.
