This audiobook from 1862 is a collection of published letters discussing the pros and cons of raising regiments consisting entirely of coloured soldiers to fight for the Union during the American Civil War. These arguments present the views of the time, and it's fascinating to see viewpoints so alien to our modern sensibilities. For instance, at the time these letters were being written, half of the members of the Northern government were against allowing any coloured citizens to own or bear arms.

Written in 1916 during the peak of the First World War this book follows Mr Doyle as he visits first the British, Italian, and finally the French sectors of the front. He meets with everyone from the highest national generals to the lowliest of frontline troopers. Although a work that can be classified as mid-war propaganda, it does offer some very interesting insights into the British mind-set at this time of the war.

The battle of the Somme was the largest battle of the first world war, in which over one million men were killed or wounded, and during which the British army suffered its worst day ever with over sixty thousand casualties. The Commander in Chief of the British forces, Sir Douglas Haig, issued a despatch in the following month via the London Gazette. Part news, part propaganda this despatch failed to mention the tragic losses and maximised the minimal gains.

'The Retreat from Mons' was a pamphlet published during the Great War (1917) which explained to the British public in glowing and glorious terms the details of the war's first allied disasters. An exercise in self-proclaimed propaganda, it stands as an exemplary sample of how the war was presented to the public in general. With heroic anecdotes and an overview of the retreat of an entire army, this is a fascinating insight into wartime publications.

This guide for infantry officers was compiled and published during the First World War. It sets out recommended practices for officers to follow with regard to training soldiers for night-based operations. As it says, the majority of soldiers came from urban environments, and many had not ever been to the countryside, and even less of them during night time.
