The Apache are a culturally connected set of Native American tribe in the southwest United States, including some Native American subtribes. The Apache and the Navajo are distant cousins who share the Southern Athabaskan languages. Apache towns can be found in Oklahoma and Texas, and also bookings in Arizona and New Mexico. Apaches have settled across the US and beyond, especially in city parts. Politically independent, the Apache Nations speak a range of dialects and have separate customs.

Indian peoples made some 400 treaties with the United States between the American Revolution and 1871, when Congress prohibited them. They signed nine treaties with the Confederacy, as well as countless others over the centuries with Spain, France, Britain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, Canada, and even Russia, not to mention individual colonies and states. In retrospect, the treaties seem like well-ordered steps on the path of dispossession and empire. The reality was far more complicated.

Charles Alexander Eastman (1858 -1939), also known as “Ohiyesa”, was an author, physician, and lecturer of Santee Sioux and Anglo-American heritage. As a passionate advocate for the rights of American Indians, he took an active role in national politics. Indian Boyhood is a memoir that chronicles the first 15 years of his life with fascinating portrayals of Sioux culture, including training as a hunter and warrior, religious beliefs and practices, and the role of the medicine man.

16-year-old Charles Dobbs returned from hunting to find the family farm has been attacked by Indians, their home burned to the ground. His father’s tortured body lies tied to a wagon, and his mother is dying. The agony they have suffered makes a deep impression on Charlie’s young mind, one that would haunt him for many years to come. In this adventure, he becomes a man as he interacts with different tribes, builds lasting friendships...and even longer-lasting enemies.

At dawn on September 22, 1711, more than five hundred Tuscarora, Core, Neuse, Pamlico, Weetock, Machapunga, and Bear River Indian warriors swept down on the unsuspecting European settlers living along the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers of North Carolina. During the following days, they destroyed hundreds of farms, killed at least 140 men, women, and children, and took about 40 captives. So began the Tuscarora War, North Carolina's bloodiest colonial war and surely one of its most brutal.

Historical photographs are on display at the museum of St. Francis Mission on the Arapaho reservation, and history seems doomed to repeat itself. A descendant of the tribal chief who appeared in the pictures has been shot to death, and the museum's curator has disappeared. The two incidents may be linked to a near century-old murder.

In August 1862, after decades of broken treaties, increasing hardship, and relentless encroachment on their lands, a group of Dakota warriors convened a council at the tepee of their leader, Little Crow. Knowing the strength and resilience of the young American nation, Little Crow counseled caution, but anger won the day. Forced to either lead his warriors in a war he knew they could not win or leave them to their fates, he declared, "[Little Crow] is not a coward: he will die with you."

In the early 1920s, members of the Osage Nation and others began to turn up dead, and in many cases, the proceeds of oil revenue owned by these people passed to white “Guardians” appointed by the federal government. By 1925, at least 24 Osage had died in unexplained circumstances, and some accounts suggest that the actual number may have been over 100. Local law enforcement seemed unable (or perhaps unwilling) to investigate effectively, and it was left to a small bureau in Washington to undertake their first homicide investigation.

In Oh What a Slaughter, Larry McMurtry has written a unique, brilliant, and searing history of the bloody massacres that marked, and marred, the settling of the American West in the 19th century, and which still provoke immense controversy today.

The following three tales are adapted from stories told by the American Indians. These are three of my favorite coyote stories. They are: "The Story of Coyote, Buffalo, and the Rock", told by the Sioux, a tribe from the Northwest, where they once formed the Great Sioux Nation, in the area that later became the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming.
