Percy "Tadpole" Phelps, an old school friend of Watson's, finds himself in a desperate situation. His career at the Foreign Office has been jeopardized by the disappearance of a secret treaty that was placed in his trust. Sherlock Holmes comes to the rescue of the disgraced diplomat.

The year is 1652. General George Monck has been through an awful lot since he sat as a prisoner in the Tower of London eight years before.
