They were fighting for Texas - fighting for the land they called home. For 12 long days the men, women and children inside an old mission known as The Alamo defended it against the soldiers who surrounded them.

It was the year 1740 and Alexander Joyce, a Scots-Irish settler, was living in absolute misery. As he watched the misty hillside of County Down, Ireland, he pondered on all of the hardships he had grown accustomed to throughout the years. From famine, religious persecution, and political persecution, he had experienced much. But now, he was facing his most challenging obstacle yet. Left with little choice, he would soon embark on the journey of a lifetime, and leave his old life behind.

During World War II, American soldiers from every city and walk of life rolled through North Platte, Nebraska, on troop trains, en route to Europe and the Pacific. The tiny town transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen, a place where soldiers could enjoy coffee, music, home-cooked food, magazines, and friendly conversation during a stopover that lasted only a few minutes.

This book is an examination of how my family's history is interwoven with that of the history of the United States, in general, and that of North Carolina in particular. Three major 20th century players and historical events are highlighted. These players are my late father, Rev. Dr. Whalen Samuel Jones, as a young participant of the Great Migration; Sergeant Louis Franklin and the Second World War in Europe; and Gastonia Mayor Thebaud Jeffers and the Modern Civil Rights Movement. After inspecting four islands in Lake Erie, Hoffman came upon one in Sandusky Bay known as Johnson's Island. With a large amount of fallen timber, 40 acres of cleared land, and its proximity to Sandusky, Ohio, Johnson's Island seemed the ideal location for the Union's purpose.
