Lauren Crenshaw and her Norwegian Forest Cat Annie run their own certified cat cafe in the picturesque small town of Gold Leaf Valley, Northern California. Lauren's fun cousin Zoe helps out as well. Ute i dypet finnes de, likene av de tyske ubåtmannskapene som under annen verdenskrig lå ved munningen av Mississippi og ventet på amerikanske oljetankere. Som barn hadde førstebetjent Dave Robicheaux mareritt om de døde sjøfolkene. Som student kom han tilfeldigvis over vraket av en av båtene mens han dykket. Det er denne hendelsen som mange år senere – i et New Orleans på vei mot tusenårsriket – setter både hans og andres liv i fare.
