Captive, Madeline Dyer's first poetry collection, is based on the therapy writings she produced when she was experiencing psychosis and OCD due to autoimmune basal ganglia encephalitis, a rare type of brain inflammation caused by the immune system attacking the brain. While her communication skills and cognitive abilities diminished due to the effects of the inflammation, she was able to share her thoughts and emotions via the written word

Nachteilig sind jedoch zu hohe Anforderungen an sich selbst, überkritische Beurteilungen und die Abhängigkeit von der Meinung anderer. Damit wird Perfektionismus schnell zur Blockade, die Erfolg und Wohlergehen behindert. Ziel dieses Selbstcoachings ist: Sich immer mehr von dem inneren Zwang zu befreien, Perfektes leisten zu müssen, und so seine Handlungsmöglichkeiten zu erweitern.

Wer so richtig scheitern will, nimmt sich am besten vor, alles perfekt zu machen. Dann wird im Job nichts je fertig, kein Partner ist gut genug, und selbst im schönsten Karibikurlaub stört noch das Salz auf der Haut und der Sand im Bett. Seien wir ehrlich: Perfektionismus ist ein Arschloch. Er ruiniert dir selbst den größten Erfolg, wenn nicht auch das letzte I-Tüpfelchen ein Diamant ist. Perfektionismus verunsichert, blockiert und zieht dich runter. Doch damit ist jetzt Schluss!

A person's emotional condition impacts their style of thinking, and vice versa. It's not just your thoughts that have an influence on your emotions. A person's thoughts and feelings are inseparable. As a result, it's not a one-way street.
