Met de verkiezing van Donald Trump tot president van de V.S. staat het verschil tussen feit en fictie onder druk en daarmee ook de democratie zelf. Kunnen we voor onze tijd iets leren van belangrijke filosofische critici van het nazisme en totalitarisme? Zowel Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) als Karl Popper (1902-1994) waren van Joodse afkomst en vluchtten voor Hitler. Beiden probeerden de ideologische wortels van het nazitijdperk te doorgronden.
