The Gwinnett County, Georgia, Police Department was formed by tough, honorable men who were brought in to clean up the county after the sheriff made moonshining his personal business. Late one night in spring of 1964, the police in Gwinnett County - and everywhere - learned just how far that respect would go in saving their lives in a tight spot. Officers Jesse Gravitt, Ralph Davis, and Jerry Everett responded to a report of suspicious activity on a desolate country road named Arc. What they found was a kind of criminal they were completely unprepared for.

In 1875, an Irish-born Baltimore policeman, Patrick McDonald, entered the home of Daniel Brown, an African American laborer, and clubbed and shot Brown, who died within an hour. In similar cases at the time, authorities routinely exonerated Maryland law enforcement officers who killed African Americans, usually without serious inquiry. But in this case, Baltimore’s White community chose a different path. A coroner’s jury declined to attribute the killing to accident or self-defense, the state’s attorney indicted McDonald and brought him to trial, and a jury convicted McDonald.

How could such a dark secret have been kept for so many years? Police Chief Greg Adams was out on patrol. After overcoming several obstacles and finishing second in my class at the academy, my undercover story continues in Kansas, where I face some of the most dangerous criminals and situations of my career. Creative undercover tactics, a task force, and continuous wiretaps help take down some of the most deadly and largest drug cartels in the US and Mexico. Frustrations with the bureaucracy and family issues lead to the end of my undercover work and a new career contracting overseas in Afghanistan, Haiti, and Liberia, as well as rising to the rank of chief of police in SC.

The 2010 Northumbria Police manhunt was the biggest ever police operation in Britain. It was conducted across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland with the objective of apprehending fugitive Raoul Moat, the former Newcastle nightclub bouncer who had just been released from Durham jail. After killing one person and wounding two others in a two-day shooting spree in July 2010, the 37-year-old went on the run for nearly a week. The manhunt concluded when Moat committed suicide, having shot himself in the town of Rothbury, Northumberland, following a six-hour standoff with armed police.
