يعدُّ هذا الكتاب واحدًا من الكتب النادرة حيث وضعه الباحث الأمريكي (جون فريدريك) أستاذ الآداب في جامعة إنديانا الأمريكية وتناول فيه تاريخ قبيلة شمر ومكانتها وموقعها السياسي منذ نزوحها إلى منطقة الجزيرة في شمال العراق سنة 1800 حتى ثورة 14 تموز 1958.

وتعدُّ شمر من قبائل العراق الكبرى فهي قبيلةٌ قحطانية مساكنها الأصلية في جبل طيء وقيل أنّها نزحت إلى هناك عام 1791، ثمَّ سار شيخها مطلق إلى سوريا متوجهًا إلى الحج مع احمد باشا الجزار وعاد إلى بادية العراق وقد أصاب نفوذًا عظيمًا !!.
