Political Philosophy

My initial reason for writing this book and its thesis was in response to a growing movement in the world to remove freedom and personal responsibility from the ethos of our time. I’ve viewed the spreading of personal freedoms across the world as one of the most consequential developments in recorded history. As such, the removal of freedom seems to be a harbinger of death and decline in society. This realization, along with the births of my sons, has led me down a road of contemplation and discovery. It took me months of thought and personal deliberation to finalize my views on our society.

First published in 1792, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman tackles many of the punitive patriarchal attitudes that dominated 18th-century society. With warmth and passion, Mary Wollstonecraft urges women to prioritize reason over emotion - a necessary step in building the strength of character required to break free from male notions of female fragility and foolishness. Wollstonecraft bases much of her argument in the case for women's education.

In Politics, Aristotle discusses a variety of different regimes, and methods of community, organizing that would ensure success for the many, providing a convincing argument on the usefulness of Democracy. He also goes into some detail on the structures of different types of governments, including dictatorships, monarchies, and constitutional democracies.

Karl Marx's devastating critique of capitalism, and his proposal of communism as the answer to the failings of the capitalist system, bore their greatest fruits in the twentieth century with the formation of the communist state in the Soviet Union.
