Myths are usually seen as stories from the depths of time—fun and fantastical, but no longer believed by anyone. Yet, as Philip Ball shows, we are still writing them—and still living them—today. При исследовании "Тысячи и одной ночи" каждую сказку надлежит рассматривать особо, так как органической связи между ними нет, и они до включения в сборник долгое время существовали самостоятельно.

Разбивка текста сказок на ночи происходила на последнем этапе их обработки, когда они попадали в руки компилятора, составлявшего очередной сборник "Тысячи и одной ночи".

Более позднего происхождения группа сказок сборника "Тысяча и одна ночь" - отражающих жизнь и быт средневекового арабского торгового города. Как это видно из некоторых топографических подробностей, действие в них разыгрывается главным образом в столице Египта - Каире.
