Private Detective

The Valley of Fear is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is loosely based on the Molly Maguires and Pinkerton agent James McParland. The story was first published in the Strand Magazine between September 1914 and May 1915. The novel starts with Sherlock Holmes receiving a cipher message from Fred Porlock, a pseudonymous agent of Professor Moriarty. After Porlock sends the message, however, he changes his mind for fear of Moriarty's discovering that he is a traitor. He decides not to send the key to the cipher, but he sends Holmes a note telling of this decision.

A dog's love for her master provides the clues that the police need for solving the disappearance of a young woman who works for a multimillion dollar charitable foundation. Rob MacKay is asked by the owner of the foundation to find the woman. When police discover that twenty-eight million dollars are missing, the case becomes more complicated, exposing the sometimes sordid dealings of the Silicon Valley's tech community.

Private investigator Mitchell King is involved with two difficult cases. He fights to shield a female astronaut from a sexual harassment when he's asked to persuade the stalker to quit. Mitch then becomes personally involved with the sexy murder witness whom he's hired to protect. As he obsesses over his clients, Mitch stubbornly refuses to face his own shortcomings.

The Final Problem is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring his detective character Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in Strand Magazine under the title "The Adventure of the Final Problem" in December 1893. It appears in book form as part of the collection The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This story, set in 1891, introduced Holmes's archenemy, the criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty. Conan Doyle later ranked The Final Problem fourth on his personal list of the twelve best Holmes stories.
