After 60 years at Gethsemani Abbey, Br. Paul follows up his recent memoir, In Praise of the Useless Life, with a poetic collection that shows how to do just that–by writing poetry. Amounting to Nothing is both practical and metaphysical, a puzzling over the ultimate things of life, and a descending on the Benedictine ladder of humility to the earthly creatures surrounding a Kentucky monastery. This is less an exploration in self-knowledge than a forgetting of self in the wonders of everything.

For so long I was a ship tossed around on turbulent waters. Then one day I discovered the beauty and wonder of nature I had been missing and embraced the Light I’d been hiding from all this time. And so, I offer a look into "An Ocean of Emotion", my debut collection of poetry divided into three sections: Darkened Skies, The Wonders of Nature, and Dawning of a New Day.

This collection of poems begins in the growing darkness of November, stretches through Advent and the seasons leading to Easter and to Pentecost, and ends in the budding light of the Scottish Orkney Islands, where the canonical hours measure time over centuries and where God broods over an austere and beautiful landscape.

John Donne was born on the 22nd January 1572 in London, into a Roman Catholic family when Catholicism was illegal in England, and there was turbulence and unrest with both state and church throughout much of Europe. During the 1590s, Donne wrote a wide range of verses, including both erotic and sacred poems, creating two major volumes of work. His strong vivacious and sensual style fusing intellect and passion, as well as inventive use of subtle argument and syntax, provided a new radical perspective that reached beyond his contemporaries.

What was happening to our country? There were a lot of people just like me. We were faces in our windows, looking out, wondering what in the world was going on. We have some evil giants trying to stomp us down, and they are trying to turn our country into something we cannot accept. These giants were systematically forcing terrible things on the population to be accepted as normal and good. God is love but He is not just soft mushy quiet love. God has a temper, and He has displayed it in His word. The scolding poems (the face in the window poems) came to me in basically a complete form.
