Ed è così che Caravaggio adocchia tra i nuovi arrivi una tavoletta di piccolo formato, opera di Hieronymus Bosch. Rappresenta una scena minuziosa e complicata.

Venezia, ottobre 1822. Al secondo piano di Palazzo Francesconi, un uomo è steso nel suo letto di morte. Si chiama Antonio Canova ed è il più grande artista del mondo. Al suo fianco è seduto il fratellastro Giovan Battista Sartori, che prova per lui un immenso amore. Ma ora ad Antonio non importa più essere confortato. Il bel Salaì, allievo e figliastro di Leonardo da Vinci, ha messo la testa a posto. Leonardo infatti, invidiosissimo di Colombo, Vespucci e degli altri grandi esploratori, vuole plagiare la carta dell'America e darla alle stampe a suo nome, per fare bella figura con gli amici fiorentini.
