Although he was born into slavery and endured a permanent physical disability, Epictetus (ca. 50-ca. 130 CE) maintained that all people are free to control their lives and live in harmony with nature. We will always be happy, he argued, if we learn to desire that things should be exactly as they are. After attaining his freedom, Epictetus spent his career teaching philosophy and advising a daily regimen of self-examination.

"Me esfuerzo por conducir lo divino que hay en mí a lo divino que hay en el universo" fueron las palabras postreras de un filósofo hierático y reservado como un oráculo, seguidor de Platón. La identidad con lo divino es un caro anhelo para los místicos de todas las épocas y tradiciones culturales, incluyendo los místicos occidentales cristianos. Texte apocryphe probablement, ce "Manuel d'Epictète" est un discours sur les vertus du Philosophe en des termes très simples, qui s'appliquent en fait à tout humain. Sans doute un des premiers textes de développement personnel de l'Histoire, l'auteur y explicite les idées et les habitudes qu'une personne qui veut trouver la vérité doit rechercher en lui et en dehors, en véritable Stoïcien. Au XXème siècle encore, il influence fortement les philosophes par ses textes, comme par exemple Alain.
