This collection features two mysteries. In the first, Madame Duclos employs Pascale Tourret to help her save her daughter from a life of crime, and the investigation takes Pascale from his home in the Lot region of France to the busy streets of Paris. There, he encounters Maurice Gautier, who is producing bad methamphetamine that is killing college kids. In the second mystery, an old flame asks for Tourret's help to find out who has stolen this year's batch of Chateau Trepagnier Beaujolais Nouveau wine, and what he finds isn't what he expects.

It is a serendipitous encounter for the hapless DI Greg Byrne when retired sleuth James Munro stumbles upon his crime scene. DI Jack Knox's Edinburgh team are busy dealing with a series of violent rapes when a man is found murdered on a residential street. The detective splits the under-resourced squad and follows up the murder himself, quickly establishing that there is no shortage of individuals who would have wanted the man dead. The victim had secured private investments for NewTech, a video games company that fell foul of copyright law. A lot of serious people lost serious money. Whilst Knox treads on eggshells and traces the finances, the rest of the team focus on the rape.

This is an excellent, page-turning Sherlock Holmes pastiche by noted author and historian Barry Day. It explores the fascinating "what if" proposition supposing the latent return of a legendary murderer, whose "signature", left upon his victims' skillfully eviscerated bodies, alerts Holmes and Scotland Yard to his unmistakable presence anew in England. To quote the cover of this recently released book: "Sherlock Holmes meets Jack the Ripper, Oscar Wilde, and THE Woman!"
