Desde los últimos años del siglo XV, la España de los Reyes Católicos conoce el resurgir de la vitalidad nacional. La victoria política deja también su impronta en lo cultural. Se abren las puertas a todo lo que signifique influjo exterior para asimilarlo, pero sin olvidar lo propiamente hispánico.

La evolución de la escultura romana es similar a la que sufrió su arquitectura. Partiendo de un cauce etrusco, oscuro y desconcertante, fue deslizándose lentamente sobre las huellas de los griegos hasta encontrar su propio estilo, tan alejado de los unos como de los otros, pero nunca lo suficiente para que podamos decir que sus artistas crearon un estilo original.

A continuación de la escultura románica, que, plena de simbolismo y alejada de todo cuanto viniera a suponer relación con la realidad, se había extendido hasta las décadas finales del siglo XII, se abre una nueva concepción de las artes plásticas, en la que el carácter fundamental es el realismo naturalista. Lentamente van desapareciendo los tipos estilizados del románico para ser sustituidos por otros directamente inspirados en la Naturaleza.

Además de la escuela castellana, a la que se ha dedicado el volumen precedente, la escuela andaluza es la más floreciente durante el siglo XVII. Sevilla es una ciudad que ahora está en auge a causa del comercio con las Indias. Esto explica la abundancia de encargos y la aparición de una mayor cantidad de escultores, que extenderán su actividad también a Granada y a otras ciudades andaluzas, al igual que dejarán sentir su influjo en la otra orilla del Atlántico.

El siglo XV es uno de los más gloriosos para la escultura española, tanto en calidad como en abundancia de obras. España sigue abierta a las influencias del exterior, que si bien antes eran francesas, ahora proceden de Borgoña, cuyo paladín había sido el genial Claus Sluter, con sus paños ondulados y fuertemente agitados y el penetrante realismo de los rostros; pero, a partir del segundo tercio del siglo y, sobre todo, al mediar éste, el estilo que predomina en la escultura española es el flamenco, de paños angulosos y muy atenta observación del natural.

El movimiento neoclásico común a toda Europa no iba a ser una excepción en la España del rey Carlos IV. Decae ahora el tema religioso en pro de las figuras alegóricas más acordes con los modelos clásicos adoptados, figuras alegóricas que ya habíamos visto cómo hacían su irrupción en nuestra escultura con la decoración de los jardines de La Granja en tiempos de Felipe V. Abundarán los sepulcros como testimonio de culto a la persona, así como el retrato, que alcanzará cimas insospechadas, favorecido por el ambiente de la época, que exige la perpetuación del personaje.

La escultura románica, que es, como la pintura, un producto anticlásico, tiene en principio, un valor funcional. Los "Libri Carolini", redactados en tiempos y por orden de Carlomagno, asignan a las imágenes de los templos dos finalidades concretas:1)-Deben utilizarse para que sirvan de adorno, y en consecuencia no debe atribuírseles ningún valor de santidad.2)-Deben servir para mantener el recuerdo de los acontecimientos sagrados y de los hombres santos.

Los últimos años del siglo XIX y los primeros del XX no dejaban adivinar con facilidad cuál iba a ser la evolución inmediata de la escultura española, a causa de la carencia total de un orden estético y de la proliferación de monumentos conmemorativos de un extremado detallismo, pero faltos de inventiva y valía artística. Pero muy pronto, a medida que se iba penetrando en el siglo XX, la escultura volvió a recuperar su antigua consideración.

Née à Strasbourg en 1761, la jeune Marie Grosholz, future madame Tussaud, est employée dès son plus jeune âge comme apprentie par un sculpteur sur cire. As I write this, not all the verdicts on the Royal Academy’s exhibition of Modern British Sculpture have been delivered. However, it is already clear that the majority will be hostile. Paradoxically, it is this, more than any other factor, which makes it seem like an important event - a turning point if you like.
